Rita de Cássia Ribeiro, nasceu em São Benedito do Rio Preto, no Maranhão, em 1966. Cresceu em São Luiz e, nos anos 1980, fazia backing vocals em shows de Chico Maranhão e Josias Sobrinho, além de participar do Boi Barrica. Em 1989 migrou para São Paulo, onde, enquanto participava de rodas de samba, estudava canto com Ná Ozzetti e Madalena Bernardes.
Este é o seu CD de estreia, depois de uma década cantando na noite paulistana, lançou Rita para o Brasil todo. Produzido por Zeca Baleiro, seu conterrâneo, também estreante em disco no mesmo ano. O repertório dançante passa pelo pop, pelo reggae e se mistura à recriações, às origens afrodescendentes brasileiras e à música tradicional nordestina.

Ooooh! I remember buying this CD back in '98, based on the strength of Isso alone... and was very disappointed. I ended up exchanging the CD for something else.
There are 5-6 excellent tracks on this album but, ultimately, it's the typical '90s album that either doesn't work from beginning to end or has lots of filler. Some of the tracks either sounded underdeveloped or were too 'wacky' for my tastes.
Still, thanks for posting this blast from the past.

Caro Trebor, eu tinha quase certeza de esse CD não atenderia ao seu gosto musical. Por ser um exemplo da miscelânea dos anos 1990, por ter um pé no pop.
Por aqui, sobretudo no sudeste do Brasil, foi uma novidade nas festas e nas rádios alternativas esse fruto do Maranhão, estado que tem uma forte produção musical, mas rara em furar o eixo Rio de Janeiro-São Paulo.
Particularmente, dancei muito ao som de Rita Ribeiro naqueles anos.

I still can’t believe I first heard this album 25 years ago! However, at the time, I was relatively new to Latin American music. In fact, just to put things into perspective, I only owned one Brazilian CD at the time: Milton Nascimento’s excellent ‘Milton’s’ (1988). Apart from that, any further knowledge of Brazilian music was restricted to a handful of compilations easily available in Europe. Also, this was around the time of the sudden popularity in Cuban music.
In hindsight, I guess I was expecting Rita’s album to be stylistically more consistent, with more songs along the lines of ‘Isso’ and ‘Lenha’. The last thing I expected to hear was a lot of reggae throughout! As much as I was raised on reggae, it isn’t a music genre I’m particularly passionate about. Also, my music palette was still very much a work in progress at the time, especially with regards to world music.
With that said, after reading your reply, I decided to download Rita’s album and reassess it. While revisiting it, a funny thing happened… It wasn’t as underwhelming and disjointed as I remembered. I think, after having listened to hundreds of Brazilian albums in recent years, Rita’s debut album finally clicked with me. I can only conclude that I was still some way from being successfully conditioned to various flavours of Brazilian music.
So, do I regret returning the CD? No, not really. Back then, in the UK, many Brazilian albums were only available as imports (and were at least 50% more expensive than the domestic album releases), and I generally have no interest in owning albums with only a few decent tracks.
Do I still consider the album to be patchy? No, but it still has its flaws. I strongly believe a couple of tracks should have been omitted – namely ‘Jurema’ (the dance beat is tacky and hasn’t dated very well) and ‘Yes (Deixa Nós Ir)’ (probably best as a b-side or hidden track). Even if I ‘got’ her album back in 1998, IMHO, those tracks still hinder my enjoyment of the album. Thankfully, with digital music files, such tracks can now easily be deleted!

fico feliz em ter contribuído para a sua reavaliação desse álbum com a minha humilde contextualização. Eu também tenho dificuldades em incorporar ao meu repertório os álbuns que tem faixas que não me agradam, também troco por outras as cópias dos LPs que têm poucas faixas que me agradam.
Revisitar é um exercício interessante, de tempos em tempos também o faço, ora confirmo as impressões negativas iniciais, ora revitalizo a percepção sobre algumas obras e estilos. Penso que a escuta sensível, a apreensão de contextos históricos, a experimentação e o tempo são fatores fundamentais nesse exercício para ampliação do nosso repertório e do gosto pessoal.
Sigamos esse caminho fraterno e rico em trocas, aprendizado e ampliação de horizontes.
